Young-adult novels seem to be at the peak of their existence these days. An emotional young-adult book, like Punch, delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, unpredictable and emotional story.
Given the title, Berry’s initial vision of the front cover was to use a glass of red fruit punch, either cracked or splintered. Another idea was a pair of boxing gloves dangling from the title. Initially, our first reaction was to use visuals that would relate to the double meaning of the word punch. Eventually, we both concluded that a not-so-literal approached was going to be better.
I needed to create something fresh and surprising for a fun, emotional and unpredictable book. I came up with the idea of the flock of birds and it turned out to be a much more appropriate choice. It was actually related to the fact that the main character drives his family towards a life changing experience.
Design wise, I created symmetry through an asymmetrical layout. The uncluttered look and the highly visible title make this cover perfect as an E-book. There is plenty of negative space for all graphic elements to breath and hook viewers’ eyes.
Punch was a lovely challenge and I was extremely happy to work with Berry for creating something out-of-the-box and eye catchy!
