Frank Watson writes beautiful poetry for people who like haiku and other types of short imagist-style poems. For his new book, The Dollhouse Mirror, he wanted a beautiful dream-like cover. He had a few cover examples of poetry books he liked. However, we both aimed at getting a more memorable design than other poetry book covers out there.
Frank mentioned he was looking for something touching on dreams (not nightmares), or the duality between fantasy and reality. The poem he was going to use on the back cover talked about a doll dreaming about a little girl who could take her home and love her. This poem was my source of inspiration. I wanted to build a dreamy scene; something almost as surreal as Dali’s amazing pictures. So I started putting together different elements in surprising places and combinations. It was a complex design, yet clean and uncluttered. My scene matched the back cover poem perfectly. And the final result was both beautiful and emotional.
I love Dali. No secret about it. And I always get my creative juices flowing when I look at his art. But Frank didn’t know that. He never even mentioned he loved Dali too. It was one of those times when two minds just click. He was instantly enchanted by my cover design proposal because it reminded him of Dali. Overall, working with Frank was yet another remarkable collaboration I was blessed with. I look forward to working with him again!
